HSV203 – Introduction to Counseling Professions Unit 8B Assignment: Self-Reflection

David Six

Due Date: 11:59 pm EST Saturday of Unit 8

Overview: Return to the Self-Assessment: An Inventory of Your Attitudes and Beliefs About Helping that you completed in Unit 1 and complete it again. After examining your responses the second time around, reflect back on your initial responses. Think about what has changed, if anything, and write a one-page reflection.

I did review my responses from the Unit 1 assignment and the answers are all still what I would say now. I don’t see any changes.

All of the questions are great and definitely cover a wide range of questions to consider and keep in mind when working with all clients.

This was probably my favorite question:

“18.Diversity. Practitioners who counsel clients whose sex, race, age, social class, or sexual orientation is different from their own

a. are likely to be very effective if they are willing to acquire a range of knowledge and skills that will enable them to become culturally competent helpers.

The more skills and knowledge and exposure a helper has in their training and background and cultural experience, the better helper that person will be. For example, I grew up in San Francisco during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, at the height of all the changes and acceptance of different lifestyles. I witnessed politicians murdered in their offices for accepting bills that allowed gays in office and to express themselves in public. Since that very low time, I have seen a tremendous growth in acceptance in all types of lifestyles ranging from gender to race to age and social class.”

The more diverse an environment is, the happier I am. The more freedom of expression that is allowed in society, the better off everyone is.
